We feel alone here, and certainly are a novelty whether we’re on our bikes of just strolling down the streets. The reason istourists are nowhere to be seen. Tourism took a hit in 2001 after 9/11 but it really collapsed in Pakistan in 2007 when the Taliban took over Islamabad’s Red Mosque and demanded that […]

2014 and we’re back on the road, as our WorldbyBike caravan moves on from Karachi, Pakistan and we hope to finish the year in Chang Mai, Thailand. The first leg of 2014’s programme takes in Pakistan, Tibet, and Nepal. The biggest challenge will be altitude as we have many days riding up above 4,000 metres. This year we stick to the DR 650’s that we switched to last year riding in Siberia. We know they’re just the job for handling swollen waterways and recovering from drownings, let’s see how they handle serious altitude. We know the fuel injected Beemers handle that really well as we saw in the Andes. Highlights on this ride include a ride up to Everest Base Camp (Chinese side), the KKK highway of course, Kashgar, Lahsa and riding into Kathmandu again, something we last did in 2003. It promises to be a goodie.

Tea in Abbotabad – Osama bin Laden’s hideout
As we sit and sip tea in this garrison town northwest of Islamabad and prior to entering the notoriously insecure province of Kohistan to our overnight stop in a compound at Besham and contemplate our big day tomorrow where we’ve been told to move along smartly and whatever we do not stop in Chilas, it […]
Hot Beginnings
We finally get it together – bikes out of customs and visas for China sorted from the consulate here in Karachi, Pakistan. We are set to leave town, 3 days later than we’d planned but everything is in place, all 3 bikes and riders are good to go. It’s hot in Karachi the day we […]
Karachi Kickstart
As with most World by Bike adventures, Jo and Gareth’s first days in a new country are spent getting their motorcycles out of customs. This involves patience and usually a fair bit of rather fascinating negotiation. So for this trip the city of Karachi became their starting point. For security reasons it was best to […]
