6,000 kms into the trip and the bikes are showing some strain. This year it’s the exhaust pipes that have fallen victim to the severity of Zambian and Malawian potholes. The pipe passes just above the support bracket for the left footpeg and when the bike grounds in one of these canyons the two meet with the hot pipe coming off worst for wear. It cracks. We’ve had one welded already and another is now in need of the same and we’ll be getting new pipe or two delivered to Dar Es Salam in a couple of weeks. Oh well, not as bad as the Long Way Down Boys – apparently they broke the suspension on one of their Adventures and the none of the dozen support crew was carrying a replacement.
